Chapter 28

Alicia was not alarmed when she arrived at Guadalajara International Airport, just a bit aggravated that her plane was arriving ninety minutes late. Departures out of El Paso had been interrupted, as people were frantically trying to get flights out of the border city.

With the situation in Latin America deteriorating, and concerns spreading in the U.S. that there might be a wholesale incursion into the United States, many El Paso people were escaping to relatives in other states less affected by the progressive reduction in services occurring in the United States, and by the closure of banks. Her flight was to a city in Mexico, and had no such rush of people trying to get aboard. But, she’d been caught in the general delays at the airport, and a squall that had come through that held every plane down until it cleared the airspace.

Expecting to have arrived in time to meet Reagan and Edith at their gate for their flight in from Mexico City, she now speculated they’d be waiting for her at hers. Stretching to retrieve her carry-on, she was jostled repeatedly by passengers eager to get off and on to their next flight or into the baggage claim area.

This airport wasn’t known for its great efficiency anyway, and arriving at siesta time always made the afternoon interesting. Once she disembarked, she found herself standing at the gate looking around, but unsuccessful in spotting either woman in the gate area.

Having checked to see if perhaps their flight, too, had been delayed, she was informed when she walked to that arrival gate that the plane had landed on time, about sixty minutes ago. Still no sign of Reagan and Edith.Frankly, I’m surprised they didn’t stick to the plan and wait for me here. She chastised them in absentia.

All of them were carrying on, with no one checking bags, but she decided to check that area as well, just in case security had discouraged them from waiting in a gate area. Texting them while coming down the escalator, no one responded. Nor did they answer when she dialed their cells. Damn it! I wonder if they even thought to upgrade their service to include international calls.

Alicia’s instincts now told her that something had happened to Reagan and Edith, but she did not know what or where it had happened. Trying to quash the fear that was rising, she checked her emails and her voicemail, just in case they’d left a message. She truly hoped they had just missed their connection in Mexico City, and for whatever reason, were not able to inform her.

She waited another two hours for the arrival of the next flight from Mexico City, and when neither woman was aboard, she knew something had intervened. But where? After the El Paso check in? In Mexico City? Or here in Guadalajara? She could barely suppress the mounting anxiety. If only I’d been on time, I could have at least ruled out Guadalajara.

Using some airline contacts she had at the El Paso airport, she was informed that both women had boarded the flight to Mexico City.
